About six months ago my dependable (for 20 years) NAD receiver just
up and died on me. Luckily I had back-up: the first amp I ever
bought, and old Akai AA-6100 Surround Sound amp that I bought in 1972
at the height of the 'quadrophonic' era, or actually a bit past it
because it only cost me $50, new. Anyway, I've moved a lot over the
years and this time was one tug too far (be careful kids, always pull
the plug, not the cord!) because one of the cords on my turntable
(Thorens TD 166 Mk II) severed. It took me about seven months to find
my soldering iron so I could fix it, but I did today and holy
guacamole, vinyl sounds soooo sweet. Plus I have a lot of records
that I don't have on cd. The first album I put on to test my
soldering proficiency was Electric Light Orchestra's 'On the Third
Day'. Wow. Now I'm listening to Television's 'Adventure'- Careful is
one of my fave songs ever.
Some time back I did an A-B test, vinyl vs cd. Played at least 200
times Billion Dollar Babies vinyl vs BDB on cd- not even close,
although it was the first cd, not the remastered one, so maybe it's
not so sure anymore.
That whole Seattle thing happened when I was in denial- I think I
have a Mudhoney 45, but aside from that my entire Sub-Pop collection
is on cassette. I loved some of the lesser lights- Love Battery,
Seaweed- man, that must have been a really exciting time in Seattle.

Jay in Toronto, going on and on because I have my records back!
