Sorry, James, but I disagree. "Ladies" is much, much more than Ron just
thinking up rhymes. It's a complete yet bizarre story of someone,
presumably a man, who (when left on his own) experiences a range of peculiar
visions of his "ladies". He is clearly suffering from mental ill-health.
As you mentioned, Margaret Mead the anthropologist is in the garden climbing
trees, while Betty Crocker is in the kitchen. One of my five favourite
Sparks' couplets can be found in this song - "Ava Braun is cracking jokes
while Joan of Arc just sits and smokes" - that's clever and very dark ;-)
The ladies always fade away when the wife (presumably) returns from a
shopping trip in the car. I stand by my contention that the protagonist in
the song is probably having an acid flashback!!!
