[Mael-list] just got back from heaven ... is this one of the 12 impossible questions before breakfast?

Without wishing to be rude or controversial, any band in a position to be
able to choose its musicians does so on the basis of a shopping list of
qualities. (Do you remember those small ads in Melody Maker in 1973 for
musicians whose faces were not "covered by a beard"? A little known band
called "Sparks" were nailing their requirements to the mast ;-) Very rarely
do you get everything you want, mostly you opt for excellence in your areas
of priority and trust that the rest will sort itself out. In the studio one
has access to trickery to make things sound the way you want. On stage the
options are reduced, specially if you are trying to go for a more "live"
sound than hitherto. You know full well that I would always advocate
professionalism in terms of knowing the material along with sensitivity,
flexibility and technical ability in any performance. Personality and
showmanship must be built on those foundations. I call that range of
control of the instrument "light and shade". I'm also on record as saying
that Tammy's creative contributions to HYL are one of the elements to give
the whole album a boost. Just occasionally in the live shows, though, I've
felt that, now and then, a little more power in the left hand and right foot
would be most appreciated ... by me at any rate.

This hole is very deep. May I stop digging now?
