VLC won't convert between file types, but it's very useful in the sense that it will play virtually any media file (even corrupted or incomplete files)! For conversion between audio file types (MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG etc.), use Winamp (www.winamp.com). Personally, I think it's far better than Windows F'ing Media Player, but I know some people might disagree... Install and run the program, then add your music to the media library. In the media library, highlight the tracks you want to convert, right-click them and choose "Send to:" then "Format Converter". The rest should be fairly self-explanatory...
