[Mael-list] Need some Sparks CD/Criminal??

No, the torrents mentioned by my Swedish compatriot included all of Sparks' output. An old torrent of "Hello Young Lovers" been, so far, downloaded/"shared" 4277 times. If the Mael brothers had sold half of those, it would have made a difference - and it is hurting us as fans, since if our favourite brothers are not making money, they are not recording.

When it comes to bootlegs, why don't Sparks Management (or whatever that Empire is called) do as Robert Fripp and Peter Gabriel, among others, have done, by selling live cds on the Internet, letting the fans get their hands on even more stuff and killing bootleggers? That would put an end to at least bootlegs being torrented. Commercially available material is another ballgame, since the fact that it's illegal to share through the Net is not something you can make go away.

  Jan-Erik,

Aren't you talking to the wrong people? Personally I think you are making a criminal of people who have bought (!) every record or cd of Sparks that is available. As I understand it, wat was downloaded are collectibles - not tracks that one can buy on cd's. If so, they have it already, right?

Trading, copying, well, that's really not the same as file sharing. There is a difference and it is really not absurd. Ask any of your friends that are trying to make a living on music.

I wouldn't drream of buying bootlegs and give money to crooks, of course.
Why should anyone buy a bootleg, I wonder?

I bought "Half Nelson" years ago. Why did I buy it? Because I love Sparks. Did Sparks
get money for it? No. Did it cut into the sales of their official live LP? No.

If I burn a copy of Lil Beethoven and give it to a friend - he goes mad for it. Now
he has to have everything Sparks - goes to shows, buys t shirts, joins the fan club.
Only because I made a copy of the cd for him. Well it did happen.

      I should go to jail?

I think accusing anyone who is a big enough Sparks fan to be on this list as a thief for
      stealing Sparks music is absurd.
