[Mael-list] Sparks Sponsorship

Last comment I promise!

Back on my personal reaction, the whole thing seems so "ugh". If they
had said, for 10 grand your company can sponsor the Shepherd's Bush
thing and have a really fun night out and make friends with a case of
champagne. Well, maybe I would have thought about it! But to bid for
two tickets, a quick handshake with R&R, and your name in the program,
it's just so .... Well I made my point now.

Yes I am very very glad they keep going and making music. No other band
that I care so much about.

Yep, no need for church mice comments. Still, I guess from my point of
view, who cares? Writers are paid to criticise and will never fail to
find something to bash. Music listeners judge musicians on other merits
than their wealth. I don't think it will bring any harm, and for some
fans and hopefully for the band and management, it will be a big
positive.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but (quite apart from my own personal opinion)
it seems like it's offering an easy target

Anyway I think presentation of this whole thing "on the night" will be
important and at least Sue / Republic have time to at least give that
some thought now that they've seen the reaction from me and a couple of
others (so I'm not the only one who sees this negatively)

Point well taken, Steve, but I have no beef with it, either. Frankly, I
think the media will largely or completely ignore the sponsorship
aspect, and they'll ignore how it's labeled. Why does it have to be
serious commercial sponsorship to fit into the definition of
"sponsorship?" On a smaller scale, isn't it really what we're doing?
Maybe it would be a nice touch if in the official programme there would
be a complete list of everyone who bid (in small print!) And there are
a lot crummier ways to help raise a little extra funding than having
some devoted fans get to meet R&R and get their name in lights alongside
the boys. We're a hard group to please. They aren't doing it for their
health, of course, nor out of charity to us, but I also look at these 21
gigs as an investment in us, the fan community. I'm halfway around the
world and won't get to see a moment of them, but it's great that they're
doing this, and don't find the sponsorship thing tacky in the slightest.

Cheers,

David
