I am really looking forward to this one- this band is going to slay
these songs in a way that the flat, timid production of the album
failed to do.
When this album came out I had firmly indoctrinated Sparks into my
little brother's head. He loved Sparks by then and got permission
from mum to stay up until midnight when they were playing the just-
released Big Beat in its entirety on the local FM rock station. I
didn't know quite what to make of it, it was certainly a departure
from Indiscreet. When the album ended my little brother left my room
and I kept listening as people called in. Next thing I knew, I heard
my little brother on the radio- he'd gone to the phone to call in.
DJ: "We're talking to Bruce. Bruce, what did you think of the album?"
Bruce: "They sound like dead fish floundering on a beach". DJ: "Uh,
okay Bruce, thanks. Next caller. . ." To this day, neither I, nor
Bruce, nor the DJ know exactly what that meant, but I called him
tonight to remind him to be in front of a computer at 1pm his time to
see Sparks perform Big Beat, and I also promised to share this dumb
story with all you Sparks fans. I am expecting an awesome gig that is
going to move BB up a notch or two in the Sparks canon.
