Hello hello all. Thought I'd weigh in with my comments, as well as comments on your comments. I agree with Matt that Eyeball Tickler should definitely have made the album, but I think they should have just added it. Anyway, let's go track-by-track.
1. Turn Up The Sun- Ok, Andy starts us off with a huge load of bombast- perfect opener and can't wait to see it as a live opener!! Lyrics are a bit weak in places (the chorus, duh), but then strong in most others. Nice and simple, like most of the album.
2. Mucky Fingers- Yeah, this one's my least favorite too, I don't know what the hype was all about, although it has grown on me quite a bit. I just noticed Andy's wicked bassline during that damn long outro, and that makes it seem not so long. I think Noel does sing with a surprising amount of passion considering most of the melody is one note over and over, but maybe that's cos the lyrics are excellent. Biggest problem is I think Noel was purposely trying to keep it as simple as possible (that damn piano note, anyone?).
3. Lyla- not much to say here. Typical first single from the lads, again full of bombast and catchy as all hell. Erm... that's it, except the outro is too long cos it doesn't do too much interesting.
4. Love Like A Bomb- Alright, Liam! Quite good, although again a bit weak on lyrics in places- but we can cut Liam some slack- he needs more practice! Otherwise, very strong, and yeah, the piano solo's pretty cool.
5. The Importance of Being Idle- Favorite track, right here. This one's very amazing. The lyrics are great (and funny too- when was the last time Noel had to beg his landlord for some more time?!), and the structure and feel and melody and chords and... that's everything, I guess! It's all perfect!
6. Meaning of Soul- As someone else pointed out, shortest Oasis track ever, and good for it. Liam keeps it simple again with just three chords on this one, although that's one more than Songbird, but anyway, Liam rocks it! I gotta say that the harmonica solo is pretty weird for me, cos it's kind of all over the place. Doesn't detract too much for me, though.
7. Guess God Thinks I'm Abel- And another good one from Liam. Some better lyrics than his other efforts, but again, only in places (the very first time I heard it, on the line in the third verse "I get round to loving you, Is that such a crime?" I finished the second half in my head before he sang it- a little obvious there, Liam). Another interesting structure, though, especially the five-second bit at the end, the "Come on home, let's make it tonight." That part is bloody cool!
8. Part of the Queue- Alright, this one rocks pretty hard too, with very good lyrics throughout. Noel is impassioned, which is great to hear, but I gotta ask, where's the guitar solo? What's there is kinda weak, and I think it could have been a lot better. Only other complaint is that on the last chorus and outro, the wall of sound is so thick I can't the hear the chords that I know are there, and that takes away from it for me, cos it just sounds like one big note/chord. It's still awesome, though, and I wish they would play it live (but they won't- maybe cos Zak Starkey can't drum like that?).
9. Keep The Dream Alive- Another superb number from Andy. Great feel and sound, and pretty good lyrics (I especially like the second bridge, that one that DOESN'T repeat, of course- "Every night I think I know, in the morning where did it go?, the answers disappear when I open my eyes"- perfect, and I think everyone's had that feeling about dreams escaping when you wake.) I don't know what else to say except Liam's vocal is excellent.
10. A Bell Will Ring- Gem shows us why he should have two songs, along with Andy. Some of the best lyrics on the album. The guitar riff at the beginning seemed a little empty at first, but I hear now why it is the way it is- less is more, sometimes. It still reminds me of an Alice Cooper song, though, for some reason, and for me that's bad, but whatever. The riff in the chorus is pure Beatles, and quite perfect. Another great vocal performance.
11. Let There Be Love- Ok, I heard this one back in 2001, or whenever it was, when it was called It's A Crime. The first time I heard the new version, the lyrics took me aback, the structure freaked me out, and Liam singing it sounded a little odd. However, the lyrics are great, the structure took some getting used to, but makes sense now (the bridge is now the chorus, and what was the chorus is now a really, really, REALLY long bridge, and it doesn't repeat, which upset me at first, but I think I'm ok now), and the tandem singing is great. Also, the new outro kicks ass!
Ok, that's the whole thing. Overall rating- TEN OUT OF TEN ALL NIGHT!! Sorry if I rambled on at all. I just love Oasis more than life itself... sometimes. I hope.
Cheers,
Chris

So, as the new album has been "officially" released
now here in the states, what are you're opinions on
the new album?
I have to say I think it's their best set of songs
since Morning Glory. The addition of Gem and Andy has
really helped the band expand in other areas
musically.
Also, as most of you know I'm the biggest Liam fan you
can find, but I absolutely love Noel's vocals on this
album. "The Importance Of Being Idle" is amazing. The
only exception might be "Mucky Fingers" as I'm not to
keen on that one! But I love his tracks in general.
Speaking of Liam... what happened to his voice?!
Whoah!! They really made his voice strong and clear on
this one. Or maybe it's just the fact, he decreased on
the cigs & alcohol.
Anyways, what do you guys think?! It's too quiet on
here... I want reviews from Ned and Shari at least.
Come on!!!
Eric :-)
Anyone pick up the cd at best buy? nice to see they
included tracks from the 94 Chicago Metro show!!
